A Commander is a naval rank equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel in seniority. A Commander is typically senior to a Lieutenant Commander and junior to a Captain. Commanders are addressed by rank and name, thereafter by subordinates as "Sir" or "Ma'am". The rank is usually abbreviated to "Cmdr." or "CMDR".
